ARRIVING!
- VOILA! Y'all've gotten yourself from your point of origin to San Jose International drome (SJO) in time to brand connections to Puerto Jimenez. A short flight volition take y'all to Puerto Jimenez, where you lot will be met by a shuttle and taken directly to El Remanso Wild fauna Guild. If you would prefer to explore the sights of southern Republic of costa rica you lot may cull to rent a car for the 7-viii hr trip (plan to arrive by 4pm on Feb sixth). El Remanso Wild animals Society will be happy to make local transportation arrangements for y'all when you make your reservations.
Spend the rest of the twenty-four hours enjoying and getting acquainted with the club, the wildlife, the other workshop particpants and your teacher, Irene Brady.
DAY ane
- The Osa Peninsula of Republic of costa rica is virtually at the Equator, which means that the sun rises at 5am and sets at 5:30pm. So set your alarm for breakfast, which begins serving at 6am (although the howler monkeys may awaken yous at sunrise).
To give us enough of time for journaling, sketching, hiking, birdwatching and the many other interesting activities available, our classes will brainstorm at 8am each mean solar day.
All supplies except your personal journal and a ball-point pen (or any you lot use to write with) volition exist provided, including a lavishly illustrated workbook filled with journaling tips which yous'll apply during classes and take dwelling house at the terminate.
So just show upwards in our airy classroom with your periodical and pen, a set supply of enthusiasm, and we'll leap right into our first session, "Creative Sketching in Your Journal." The project volition be to create an illustrated, fun-to-read nature/vacation journal, which will take shape over the course of the workshop.
Equally a first step, you will tell the states how you envision your ideal journal, then we'll discuss ways we can reach those goals. Our efforts in this workshop will be aimed at getting a handle on artistic writing and sketching, which are within the achieve of every journaler.
Our workbook will have examples of things that can be put in journals, both ideas and actual items, to brand your journal a book you return to again and again for inspiration, reflection, memories and enjoyment.
We'll also examine sample pages of interesting journals, and discuss what makes them work. A wide assortment of successful (and less and then) journal pages volition be available for comparison
Then, later a couple of warmup exercises,y'all'll begin to draw exotic items provided past the jungle. By x:30 even beginners should have enough education and feel to forge alee on their own, and you can accept off with your journal to exercise what you lot've just learned out in the jungle, in your room, or wherever you similar. Your consignment will be to draw one or more items, and journal your observations on the page around them.
Each participant volition begin and keep forwards from his/her initial personal skill level. While you may learn from other journalers' experiences in the workshop, this is not a competition.
The jungle experience can be incredibly inspiring. There will be plenty of fourth dimension for solo sketching and journaling of whatever intriques yous in the jungle or downwardly on the embankment. Sketching opportunities may be merely outside your room: scout for coatis, monkeys and agoutis foraging on the woods floor or in the trees overhead, and take advantage of encounters with various exotic insects, birds, iguanas, crabs and critters on the forest trails and downward on the beach -- to say nothing of the opportunities for botanical sketching!
Dejeuner is served daily from noon to one:30pm, and we tin can regroup over lunch, if y'all wish, to check on progress.
The afternoon course resumes at 2 and goes until three:xxx, fine-tuning what you have already learned and experimented with during the morning time and on your solo outing.
By the end of this first mean solar day fifty-fifty inexperienced artists should exist able to describe interesting items and scenes sufficiently well to add together a smashing bargain of interest to their journal pages. A gentle critique will give you lot ideas for improving your techniques and skills.
You may choose to sketch farther in the remaining fourth dimension before dark, or you may prefer to explore, relax or take a nap.
A delicious dinner will exist served from 6 to 8pm, preceded by drinks and happy hour. People unremarkably go to bed adequately early on (before 10) because the short daylight hours mandate an early rising.
DAY 2
- After breakfast, at 8am, nosotros'll begin our "Creative Writing in your Journal" session. Your starting time excercise will be to observe and sketch a natural particular (a star fruit, for instance, or a kapok tree pod) in your journal, so turn a curt, terse judgement almost it into an interesting narrative of observation and clarification (interwoven, if you wish, with your holiday experience).
And so, after a brusque review of the rules of haiku (brusque, punchy Japanese nature-tone-poems) you lot'll try your hand at writing a haiku about the subjects you've just been sketching and journaling most. This is a favorite activity for many workshop attendees, because haiku goes so perfectly with the sketches in your periodical, and adds class to a journal page.
Subsequently sharing our haikus, we'll accept a look at creating quickie four-liner poems which can also pep up a journal page, as well equally freeform poems that don't rhyme -- many people adopt these. The surrounding jungle awning, rollicking monkeys and macaws brand perfect subjects for these efforts.
At 10:30, as on Day 1, you'll pause for the morning, using the time until 2pm to work on your poems or sketching, whichever yous prefer, and to seek out a flattish detail that would logically fit into your journal (a pressed leaf, a feather, a blossom, a postcard or photo, etc., all would serve well).
At 2 we'll encounter once again in the classroom for our afternoon session. You'll examine various items that tin exist glued or taped onto a journal folio to add involvement.
Then you'll look over ways to add elegance to your journal with penmanship (to keep it readable) and calligraphy -- you'll have a take a chance to effort your hand with a felt-tip calligraphy pen on your pick of three alphabets, then you'll return the morn's best poem/s into your journal, and experiment with outlining colored calligraphy capitals to illuminate the page. No angst here -- nosotros're just having fun!
If nosotros have any bloggers (or future bloggers) in the group, we'll discuss how to catechumen your weblog into a swish journal you can share with others (and yourself in example your blog server "turns turtle"). We'll as well hash out how to avoid copyright bug and talk about how to preserve your periodical for the future.
An encouraging critique volition give you ideas for improving your techniques and skills.
24-hour interval 3
- You've been working hard upwardly to now to get a expert foundation in sketching and journaling. Now it's fourth dimension to relax a bit and accept information technology like shooting fish in a barrel. Possibly yous volition choose to eat your breakfast in the superlative of a tree, 125 anxiety to a higher place the ground, equally you put your journaling technques to piece of work on an aerial view.
We'll see at 8am every bit usual, in our classroom to absorb "Watercolor Pencil Techniques" -- how to apply watercolor pencil color effectively to your journal sketches, choosing from a
large rainbow assortment of watercolor pencils. Yous'll larn how to dry-alloy the pencil colors, then you'll dabble briefly with applying water for a watercolor effect. For those who are interested in drawing the human being figure, nosotros'll grade sidewise circles and depict each other drawing each other before finishing for the day at 10:30.
The rest of the Day 3 is yours to use every bit y'all wish, just you exercise have an assignment: endeavour one or more new approaches to produce an bonny journal folio before tomorrow'south course. With the afternoon free, you take a great opportunity to become deeply involved in whatever aspect of the course you are most interested in, and to experiment with adding color to your sketches.
You may also want to experience some of the other marvelous activities at El Remanso: hiking, walking on the beach, tree-climbing into the jungle canopy, ziplining from tree to tree, rappelling down waterfalls, horseback riding, surfing, kayaking, or visiting Corcovado National Park just up the route. All of these things will provide fodder for heady journaling.
Imagine how y'all will "tell the story" as you are experiencing your adventures. The hiking and beach walking are free; the other activities are offered at reasonable rates, and you will discover them well worth the price.
Mean solar day four
- The last class will begin at 8 with a critique to admire each others' previous day's efforts. So nosotros'll pick up our bag luncheon, tuck our periodical, sketching tools, swimming conform, towel,
and sunscreen into our fanny pack (or whatever you utilise to conduct your goodies) and hitting the trail to the beach for some pleine aire sketching. The trail downward to the embankment is steep, and then pack every bit lightly as possible and carry a walking stick. We'll take our time and make stops for any who need to get slowly -- in that location's always something to sketch on the mode!
Arriving at the beach, the choice of what to sketch or periodical volition be yours. At that place are embankment scenes, coconut copse, a wonderful waterfall to visit and tidepools to bask in -- and a shady forest border for the intrepid journaler to ply his or her new skills.
Pelicans, macaws, squirrels and monkeys, frigate birds, coatis, hermit crabs and myriad other wonders may be observed and sketched there, as well.
Nosotros'll return by ii for a concluding critique of your results from this outing. We'll have photos of the group and your handiwork which can exist emailed to each of you lot when we return dwelling. If y'all are willing, your results and comments about the class may appear on this workshop website afterwards on.

- Unless yous have arranged to continue your stay, say good day to this wonderful jungle and sketching feel at El Remanso Wild fauna Lodge. The shuttle will deliver you lot to the drome at Puerto Jimenez where yous volition catch your flight for San Jose (SJO).
